EL CALAFATE

At the edge of the Patagonian steppe and lakeshore is El Calafate. This small tourist town, with just over 20,000 inhabitants, is in Argentina's Santa Cruz province, 316km from its capital Rios Gallegos.
Located at the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park, this breathtakingly beautiful area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. Within the 600,000-acre park are some of Patagonia's most important places, such as the Perito Moreno and Upsala glaciers, and Cerro Fitz Roy.
El Calafate is 80km from the national park and acts as a base from which the majority of the region's activities are accessed. Trips to more remote places like El Chalten, and even the Torres del Paine National Park in Chile are all possible from El Calafate.
El Calafate's tourism infrastructure is ideal, with the city offering a variety of hotels, local cuisine and transport services.

How to get there

Restaurants

$$$$ CASSIMIRO BIGUÁ: Av. del Libertador 963 (El Calafate); Tel. 492590.

If you are planning a special evening, this is one of the most exclusive, and expensive, restaurants in the area. The cuisine is elaborate and uses local produce. There are 3 locations in El Calafate: trattoria, parilla and restaurant.

$$$ LA TABLITA: Cnel. Rosales 61. Tel. 491065

The best parilla in town! The famous Patagonian lamb is what sets this restaurant apart and is a must. It is a typical, popular and affordable restaurant often crowded with large groups having fun and enjoying the best steaks in town. Best to book before you go.

$$ QUIDU: De Los Fresnos 3362 (El Calafate); Tel. 49-3071

The menu at Quidu is based on atypical international cuisine and traditional regional dishes such as lamb, trout, smoked delicacies and berries, which can be accompanied by a good selection of various national wines. It has a beautiful view of the lake, but unfortunately due to the lack of lighting, this is best seen during the day.

$$ PURA VIDA: Av. del Libertador 1876 (El Calafate); Tel. 49-3356

Colourful and relaxed restaurant overlooking Lake Argentino. Located in the city centre, this is one of the best places to eat hearty casseroles at an affordable price. The atmosphere is young and local, so if you're looking for somewhere away from the tourist trail, this is not to be missed.

$ LA LECHUZA PIZZAS: Av. del Libertador y 1ro. De Mayo (El Calafate); Tel. 49-1610

This pizza parlour is popular, close to the city centre and well priced. It has two branches, one where you can play pool and another more traditional restaurant.

Health and Safety

The public hospital offers free care for any emergencies. The city also has private and specialized clinics.

HOSPITAL PÚBLICO: Julio A. Roca 1487 / Tel.491173

El Calafate is safe but as with any other tourist destination is always advisable to take care of your belongings, especially in crowds and at the bus terminal. The number of telephone contact with local police to any emergency is 101 and the local police station is located at Avenida Libertador 819.
