Path of the clouds trekking

A unique and exciting hiking itinerary through the middle of the northern Andes mountain range, lasting 2 days. The name of this trekking experience derives from the possibility of appreciating the entrance of the clouds from Chile to the Frías river valley during the tour.

It starts at Pampa Linda base and the night is spent at the Agostino Rocca refuge. The next day, viewing a completely different landscape, you will cross the Valdivian jungle in Chilean territory and then arrive in Puerto Blest and take the boat to Puerto Pañuelo in San Carlos de Bariloche.

Day 1 - Bariloche - Agostino Rocca Refuge

Our day starts picking-up the passengers from their hotel at 8.00 AM and driving towards Pampa Linda that’s 80 km away from Bariloche city. Once there, we start from the gate,a few meters from Guardaparque’s house, following the car track that after 3km takes us to Castaño Overo river. We cross it by the pedestrian bridge and follow the road that ascends a little. Approximately 800 meters after, we take a detour that goes to the right and after 700 meters we reach Alerce river. The road continues, always bordering the river, sometimes next to its shores and sometimes a little further. We walk 5km stopping to eat some handmade sandwiches in order to recover some energy and rest for a while. We arrive to a bridge that crosses that river. A few minutes later the road begins little by little to climb with more slope until we reach the “snail” (rise with zigzag shape with a steep slope). After overcoming it, the road ascends in a more gentle way with ascents and descents through a stone canyon and small mallines, until we finally arrive at a large green grass mallín from where we can see the refuge that is already nearby. We cross the mallín and in 5 minutes we reach the Refuge where we have breakfast and dinner. The overnight can be inside the Refuge or in tents.

We get up early and have breakfast in the early hours as the return boat sails from Lago Frías at 4:30 PM. The road begins in the same refuge with a descent that crosses a beautiful lenga forest. Arriving at the end of the descent we reach some rocks from where we can see the front of the Frias glacier. Here begins a small stone path downhill and at the height of Km 4 we will reach the Frias River that drains from the glacier with an impressive view of it. We cross the river by a wooden bridge and from this point we can notice how the vegetation begins to transform into a Valdivian jungle full of flowers, vines that cover the trees and some very large and ancient alerces. At Km 9 we find a suspension bridge that crosses the Frías River and from here we have the last three kilometers that border the river until we reach Puerto Frías where we take a boat to Puerto Blest and then another one that goes across Nahuel Huapi lake and takes us from Puerto Blest to Puerto Pañuelo where the driver is waiting us to take the passengers back to their hotel, always accompanied by the guide.
