Itinerario
Itinerary
Travelling along this stunning route, we will also visit a petrified forest and will do brief trekking. Arrival at the inn in the evening.
Distance: 500 kilometers
Duration: 10 hours
Going down the RN40 route we will appreciate the great variety of local fauna crossing the Caracoles glen arriving to Pinturas river, point of access to the most important archeological site of Patagonia : the Cueva de las Manos . In this cave the ancestors of the aboriginal Tehuelches have left their testimonies during thousands of years, being a valuable record of their customs and organization. The cave is just a part of a big system of painted eaves, where the different colors correspond with to different periods, being territorial markers as well as chronological historic accounts. We will continue exploring with a short trekking through a lunar landscape of grey plateaus and multicolored canyons.
We´ll continue south-east to visit a typical post on mytical route 40 and finally arrive at Lago Posadas, a small town with 300 inhabitants where we will spend the night.
Crossing from south to north, in less than 100km it climbs from 200m to 1500m, making it the highest road in Southern Patagonia, where we´ll appreciate contrasts between steppe, Andean forest, high altitude pasture and high mountain.
and the high mountain. We end on a viewpoint towards the impressive Mount San Lorenzo (3706mts).
The sighting of condors, the trekking among basaltic dykes and unique sandstone formations, or the simple contemplation of the changing landscape make this a unique journey to experience the authentic Patagonia with all five senses.
In the afternoon, we’ll connect with the Carretera Austral to marvel at the immense Río Baker and enjoy a short trek to visit its “confluence” with the Nef River, which flows from the Northern Ice Field.
We will finally arrive at Puerto Tranquilo, on the lake shore.
For those interested in getting even closer to the glaciers, we suggest an optional boat trip to San Rafael Lagoon or a walk on the Exploradores Glacier.
